Kaunas Science and Technology Park

Kaunas Science and Technology Park (Kaunas STP) is the largest partner involved in science and business cooperation in Lithuania. More than 350 companies have been incubated here with a success rate exceeding 90%. Today, we integrate more than 90 start-ups, SMEs and multinationals working in 6 main technological fields: future energy, engineering, social innovation, IT, sustainable chemistry and health technologies. All the companies are welcome to join the innovation community.

Kaunas STP, together with Kaunas University of Technology, Vytautas Magnus University and other stakeholders of the innovation ecosystem, builds an innovation value chain that allows it to offer specialised business support, laboratory facilities and pools of talent to the companies.

Key challenges for innovation policy

The smart specialisation areas have been identified with regard to global and national challenges, the sectors of Lithuanian economy, RDI potential and opportunities for the establishment and competition in global markets. 

The following challenges relevant to Lithuania have been identified: 
  • Low business productivity and a lack of advanced technology, innovative processes, products and services
  • The gap between skills and labour market needs, underdeveloped talents and creative potential
  • Lack of business, science, intersectoral and international partnerships to create and apply knowledge, technology and to put innovation in practice
  • Insufficient diversification of energy sources, high energy price, inefficient and ineffective use of energy
  • Worsening demographical situation
  • Uneven regional development, poverty, illegal work and low social cohesion.

Smart Specialisation Areas in Lithuania:

At the national level chosen growth areas are as follows: 
  1. Energy and sustainable environment.
  2. Inclusive and creative society.
  3. Agricultural innovation and food technologies.
  4. New production processes, materials and technologies.
  5. Health technologies and biotechnologies.
  6. Transport, logistics and information and communication technologies (ICT).

Main objectives of the RIS3

The objectives of the RIS3 programme include: 
  • Creation of innovative technologies, products, processes and/or methods and, using the outputs of these activities, responding to global trends and long-term national challenges
  • Increasing the competitiveness of Lithuania’s legal entities and their opportunities for establishment in global markets – including the commercialisation of knowledge created in the implementation of the RDI Priorities and in developing the RDI Priority Areas, and using the unique synergy arising from the collaboration of science and businesses, economic entities and other public and private sector entities.

Funding

The activities specified in the RIS3 strategy are funded by the Investment Action Programme of European Funds for 2014-2020. All ERDF funds are allocated for implementation of Smart Specialisation (RIS3) measures. The amount is 3,5 billion EUR.
